As environmental issues are one of the most consequential global issues, governments make various efforts to reduce pollution. The government produces policies, creates promotions, and looks for alternative sources of energy. However, despite these efforts around the world, the South Korean government is not going the same direction.

The South Korean government deliberately cut down a mountain with high biodiversity for an eight-day festival, with the promise of restoration. The 2018 international winter games were hosted in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Pyeongchang had all the infrastructure to host the Olympics except for a downhill course. Downhill, a category in Alpine skiing, requires a steep, long length ski course, which was non-existent in Pyeongchang.

To address this problem, the South Korean government came up with a plan to cut down Gariwangsan, a mountain prominent for its high biodiversity, including a restoration project that would happen as soon as the Olympics is over. However, the restoration did not begin yet, even four years after the Olympics.

This is an issue that I want to address through my project. Although the Gariwangsan issue (deserves to be / must be)acknowledged by many people, not many know about this issue. Through my project, I hope to spread awareness about this Gariwangsan issue.

Hence, I created a 3D virtual artspace, which resembles a vault of seeds. In this vault, there are seeds that are lost in the process of development of the ski slope. The inspiration of the vault came from the The Baekdudaegan National Arboretum Seed Vault Center, one of the only two seed vaults in the world, with the other located in Norway. Additionally, I created three short documentaries to visualize the importance of Gariwangsan. One was created in collaboration with an environmental activist group (Green Korea, 녹색연합); one focuses on the National Seed Vault that prevents from plant to go extinct.
