Despite South Korea being wealthy and considered a country with a high quality of life, South Koreans quietly suffer from mental health illness. This is due to mental health stigma.
Mental health stigma can be divided to three as follows: public, referring to negative attitudes towards others with mental ailments; self, referring to negative and shameful attitude to oneself whens suffering mental ailments; institutional, referring to public policies in place acting against persons with mental health ailments.
On top of the shame and social pressure from mental health stigma, mental health stigma has also shown to hamper recovery or even worsen symptoms with mental health ailments. Thus, it is important to address this issue.
